RedRock FaxNow! 5 Deals with the Oftel
Truth About Junk Fax New FaxNow! software designed to handle new UK regulations regarding the transmission of unsolicited faxes. In the May 13, 1999 issue of FaxWire, we ran a story about how the UK telecom regulatory commission, Oftel, has mandated a listing service whereby those who register to be on the list become off limits for unsolicited faxes. Subsequent breaches of their no-junk-fax status can result in fines up 5,000 pounds. Yesterday we ran a story on UK-based RedRock's new version of its FaxNow! fax server -- but what we were a day late in grasping is that FaxNow! 5 already provides features to comply with the new Oftel rules: To protect FaxNow! 5 users from infringing Oftel guidelines, fax numbers of Oftel-list registrants can be added to a central call restriction list. When any FaxNow! user subsequently tries to fax to a list member, FaxNow! 5 automatically blocks those calls... Similarly, fax numbers can also be added to a call-authorization list which forces faxes addressed to specified numbers to be authorized by a supervisor prior to transmission. Supervisors can then determine if faxes being sent to Oftel-list registrants are legitimate or do qualify as unsolicited messages. Without this second feature, it would be impossible to send solicited faxes back to Oftel-list registrants. In addition, a 'Blacklist' feature can be used to block the receipt of junk faxes at the FaxNow! 5 server. To block unwanted faxes, the CSIDs of the offending fax senders can be added to Blacklists; when offending faxers try to send junk faxes again, FaxNow! identifies their CSIDs and terminates their fax calls immediately.
